Back in 1996, after my first year at Uni, I decided that I wanted to upgrade my poor old stereo. It had served me well, but since I was working in the holidays and made some money, I went out and bought some components, along with a couple of floorstanding polk speakers and some cheap surrounds.

12 years later - I’d stopped using the surrounds cause they really didn’t add much, and my sound had started to clip from left to right; so I decided to upgrade to a new system.

Through a friend of a friend of a friend, I managed to find an amazing deal on a new Yamaha AV receiver, and also managed to grab a 5.1 surround set of speakers. (I figured 7.1 was excessive, but nowadays excessive is just awesome so I’m still undecided if I’ll get 2 more haha.) The price I paid was pretty close to cost, so I reckon I got pretty lucky!

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve mounted the surrounds up near the ceiling to get some real surround, put a center up above the tv (building a shelf in the process), and now have a decent 5.1 system. At last!

Rock band has been pretty awesome with the new sound, vocals are coming through the center and the crowd are behind you chanting away!

So, the DIY is almost complete, and I’m pretty happy with the new setup. Maybe I should relax kick back and enjoy it!
