My personal top 5 electronic games of 2009
I made this list before the new year, and thought I’d leave it for a couple of weeks to ensure that I still agreed with it. In 2009, I didn’t play any FPS games, and my gaming choices were heavily influenced by my (now) 4 year old son Preston.
Here are my favourite games of the year:
#5 - Plants vs Zombies.
This was the game I played the most with Preston, and we played it over and over again for months. It’s a fantastic game, has a great formula and appeals to all ages. The iPhone version is due end of Jan 2010, so if you haven’t played it give the iPhone version a try.
#4 - Uncharted 2.
Uncharted 2 was a masterpiece, and has redefined how I view linear action adventure games. Everyone needs to play this game to see how far video games have matured in the last few years.
#3 - Shadow Complex.
I absolutely adored Shadow Complex. Shadow Complex is clever in a number of ways - it took the classic game design formula from the Nintendo classic Metroid, and remade it using some ingenious techniques. Comfortably familiar, yet still new. If you’ve never played Metroid, this may be a nice way to experience what made it so popular.
#2 - Dragon Age: Origins.
I was introduced to computer games in the 80’s, and one of my most favourite games during my youth was the SSI Gold Box game “Curse of the Azure Bonds”. Since that time I’ve had a soft spot for all western D&D influenced RPG games. I’ve been waiting a long time for a successor to Baldur’s Gate, and when it finally arrived all my desires were fulfilled. I need to go play this again.
#1 - New Super Mario Brothers Wii.
It’s just a 2D Mario game. That’s how I describe this game and it’s completely true. What blows me away about this game is that it is honed to perfection. The jumping, the controls, the gameplay - it’s just right. There’s nothing flashy here, but I will be playing this game for a long time.
